Cal Water plans to replace 4,900 feet of aging 6-, 8-, and 12-inch ductile iron and cast iron water main with 4-, 6-, and 12-inch PVC pipe and ductile iron water main, as the existing main was installed in the 1940s and is becoming less reliable. Additionally, the utility plans to replace five fire hydrants and all individual customer service connections from the main. Installation will take place on Chester Avenue and K Street, from 24th Street to Golden State Highway. The project is expected to be completed by September.
Crews will make every effort to minimize traffic delays during construction, which will be performed Monday through Friday between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. on K Street and Monday through Friday between 7 p.m. and 5 a.m. on Chester Avenue. Crews will also minimize any temporary service interruptions required including installing new valves to limit the impact of the shutdowns. Customers will be notified in advance of any planned, temporary shutdowns.
"This important infrastructure upgrade will enable us to keep delivering the reliable supply of safe, clean water that Bakersfield businesses count on to serve their customers and for local families as well," said District Manager Tammy Johnson. "We have partnered with the City to reduce any disruptions the work may cause and look forward to providing greater fire protection, enhanced water quality, and stronger water system reliability to our community, both now and for generations to come."
